Catchment rehabilitation through economic transformation
Location: Eastern Cape, South Africa
The project is centred around the endeavour to restore over 200 000 ha of degraded land. The point of departure was transform the agricultural economy of the catchment by designing and implementing agricultural businesses together with existing commercial and small scale farmers, enabling them to farm profitably on smaller land sizes, in order to make degraded land available for rehabilitation.
Project Development Stage:
Talmar partnered with international development agency, Commonland, and local implementation partner, Living Lands, to restructure the agricultural economy of the Baviaanskloof, so as to minimise the destructive ecological and socio-economic impacts of farming practices and present a sustainable, scalable and socially regenerative economic model to the area.
