Location: Mbombela, Mpumalanga, South Africa
Project Preparation Cost (total): R6.4m
Project Implementation Cost: +/- R65m
A co-created, sustainable and scalable approach to greenbelt design and implementation is projected to result in substantial enhancement of natural capital, opportunities for social regeneration, an increase in the sense of security felt by people residing in or visiting the area, opportunities for skill development, capacity building and job creation, as well as opportunities for economic value generation, specifically with respect to tourism.
Project Development Stage:
The Mbombela Economic Development Partnership in collaboration with Talmar are driving the Greater Riverside Biodiversity Initiative, a proposal for the design and implementation of an integrated metropolitan open system (or greenbelt) for Mbombela. The greenbelt will leverage local knowledge and passion toward the design of an ecological asset which would aim to restore, conserve and enhance biodiversity, increase the city’s resilience to climate change, aid in the prevention of urban sprawl, and stand to generate significant opportunities for local economic and socio-economic development.
